An opera by Benjamin Britten
Based on a short story by Henry James
Composed at the height of the Vietnam War, Benjamin Britten’s Owen Wingrave is as pertinent now as then. Is pacifism an act of cowardice or rather a desire to escape from the spiral of war in order to achieve lasting peace? To what extent do we determine our own future? Should we let past events inform the decisions we make? Britten’s characters grapple with timeless issues in this gripping psychodrama.
Following the award winning production of Handel’s Agrippina, Opera Collective Ireland (formerly IYO) once again joins forces with the Irish Chamber Orchestra to showcase some of Ireland’s finest young singers in an intense and daring staging of Britten’s masterwork.
An opera for the times in which we live.
